Diagnostic Centre & Pathology Lab Software for India

One order-to-report workflow for pathology, radiology, cardiology and endoscopy, with walk-ins, home collection and analyzer links.

In short

Standalone diagnostic centres and pathology labs need accurate sample handling, fast reports and clean billing, often with no hospital behind them. DevOrbital HMS runs diagnostics on one configurable order-to-report workflow, supports walk-ins and typed reports, and can interface with analyzers and imaging devices. Adopt the lab module alone or the full platform.

The challenge

What this kind of facility runs into

Sample mix-ups and lost tubes

Manual labelling and handwritten registers make it hard to know where a sample is. A mislabelled tube costs a repeat collection and a patient's trust.

Reports delayed by transcription

If technicians read values off an analyzer and type them into a report, results are slow and each manual step is an opportunity for error.

Many service lines, one team

Pathology, X-ray, ultrasound, ECG and others each have a different report format, but the front desk and billing process should not change for each one.

Referrers, packages and credit accounts

Centres deal with doctor referrals, corporate accounts and health packages. Keeping rate lists and settlements right is hard in a spreadsheet.

Outcomes

What changes once it's running

Samples you can trace

Barcoded sample labels tie each tube to a patient and an order, so the question of where a sample is has a clear answer.

Quicker, cleaner reports

Auto-captured analyzer results and report templates reduce typing, and validation steps stay in the workflow.

One counter process for every test

Whether the order is a blood test or an ultrasound, billing, queueing and delivery work the same way.

Better preparation for quality assessments

Documented processes and an audit trail help you prepare when a lab seeks external quality recognition such as NABL accreditation.

Rollout

A sensible way to adopt it

  1. 1

    Configure tests and templates

Set up your test catalogue, reference ranges, report templates and rate lists in System Configuration.

  2. 2

    Run the front desk digitally

Start with registration, order entry and billing, including walk-ins and referrer-wise records.

  3. 3

Add sample labels and manual entry

Introduce barcoded sample labels and result entry with validation before connecting any machine.

  4. 4

    Interface analyzers one by one

Scope and enable analyzers individually, testing each before relying on it for live results.

  5. 5

    Extend to imaging and delivery

Add radiology or cardiology on the same workflow and give patients digital access to reports.

In practice

What a day looks like

Illustrative scenario · not a customer story

Morning rush at the collection counter

Pathology lab owner

Walk-in patients queue at 7 a.m. The receptionist registers each one, bills the tests and prints barcoded sample labels. The phlebotomist labels tubes at the chair, and the samples travel to the bench. When the biochemistry analyzer finishes, results flow into the system for the technician to review and validate. The owner, away from the lab, checks pending samples on screen and sees that two urgent reports are due. Reports are released from templates and patients receive them the same day. This is an illustrative composite, not a real lab.

What does a diagnostic centre need from a LIS and RIS?

A diagnostic centre is a production line. Orders come in, samples or scans are processed, results are checked and reports go out. Software must keep that line visible at every stage. The laboratory information system handles orders, sample tracking, results and reports for pathology, while the radiology information system does the same for imaging.

In DevOrbital HMS these are not two different products. Pathology, radiology, cardiology and endoscopy share one order-to-report workflow, which is configured rather than custom-built for each service. Walk-ins and urgent cases enter the same queue, and manual entry, typed reports and templates mean no machine is forced on you. For more on the underlying concepts, read our laboratory information system guide.

How does analyzer interfacing work for a standalone lab?

Many analyzers can send results using commonly used protocols such as ASTM or HL7, usually over a serial or network connection. Whether a particular instrument can be connected depends on its output interface, so each device is assessed during onboarding and enabled independently. See lab analyzer integration for the details of what is scoped.

Sample identification is the other half. Barcode and QR scanning links tube labels to orders so that results from a machine are matched to the right patient. Our article on barcode sample tracking in the lab explains why this single step removes so many errors.

If you are curious about the protocols, we explain them in LIS analyzer interfacing with ASTM and HL7.

Is diagnostic software useful for quality accreditation?

Quality bodies look at documented, repeatable processes. NABL offers voluntary accreditation for medical laboratories against ISO 15189, which covers technical competence and quality management. Software cannot make a lab accredited, but it can make records easier to produce: who ran a test, when a result was validated, which version of a report was released.

The audit trail in System Master logs every create, edit and delete with who, when and what, and documented workflows help you prepare for assessment. For a goal-focused view of speeding up reports, see faster lab turnaround.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Yes. The laboratory module runs on its own with registration, orders, sample tracking, results and reports, and connects to billing and other modules when you add them.

Yes. Diagnostics share one configurable order-to-report workflow, so pathology, radiology, cardiology and endoscopy can all be set up without separate tools.

No. Manual entry, typed reports and templates are supported, so you can start without any machine integration and interface analyzers later.

Collection-centre and home-collection workflows are configurable per engagement. Please discuss your setup with us so we can scope it accurately.

The patient portal and app add-on lets patients access reports digitally. WhatsApp or SMS alerts can notify them when reports are ready.

No software can do that. NABL accreditation depends on your lab's competence and quality system. DevOrbital HMS is designed to help you prepare, with documented workflows and an audit trail.
