Patient Care

Hospital Management System (HMS) for Indian Hospitals

One platform for OPD, IPD, emergency, diagnostics, pharmacy, billing, HR and medical records, built around how Indian hospitals actually run.

  • HMS
  • Hospital management software
  • Hospital information system
  • All-in-one HMS

In short

DevOrbital HMS is a hospital management system for Indian hospitals with 40+ modules and screens covering patient care, diagnostics, pharmacy and stores, finance, HRMS, medical records, reports and system administration. Every module can run on its own or as part of the full platform, on cloud or on-premise, so a hospital can start with one department and grow without changing software.

The problem

Where hospital management usually breaks down

Departments that cannot see each other

OPD, ward, lab and pharmacy each keep their own register or software. A doctor cannot see the last lab result and billing cannot see what was dispensed, so people walk papers between counters.

Billing that trails the care

Charges are captured late or not at all because services are recorded in one place and billed in another. Discounts, TPA rates and package exceptions are settled by memory and phone calls.

No single patient record

The same patient is registered twice under slightly different spellings, and the file room cannot assemble a complete history when an auditor, insurer or family asks for it.

Management reports built by hand

Owners wait until month end for spreadsheets that someone stitched together from five sources, and nobody can say with confidence which department or doctor drives revenue.

How it works

The hospital management workflow, step by step

  1. 1

    Register the patient

A UHID is created or found through inline patient search, so every later action attaches to one identity.

  2. 2

    Consult and order

OPD queues, case sheets and prescriptions lead directly to lab, imaging and pharmacy orders.

  3. 3

    Diagnose and dispense

Orders flow through one order-to-report diagnostic workflow and the right pharmacy unit.

  4. 4

    Admit and treat

Bed and ward occupancy, nursing notes, medication administration and transfers run inside the same record.

  5. 5

    Bill and claim

Charges roll into unified billing, with discount approvals and TPA or scheme claims alongside.

  6. 6

    Discharge and archive

Discharge closes the episode and the case moves into a read-only, chronological MRD record.

Use it on its own — or connected

Start with one module or take the whole platform

Every DevOrbital module runs on its own, so a hospital can begin with billing, a laboratory or the pharmacy and add departments as it is ready. When modules are bundled they share one patient identity, one billing engine and one record, which is what turns separate tools into a hospital management system.

Pairs naturally with:

Who it's for

Built for the people who run the department

  • Owners and administrators of multi-specialty and single-specialty hospitals
  • Nursing homes and maternity centres moving off paper registers
  • Hospital groups that want one system across branches
  • Medical colleges and teaching hospitals with many departments
  • IT and operations heads replacing several disconnected tools

Illustrative scenario · not a customer story

One patient, six departments, one record

Hospital administrator

A patient walks into OPD in the morning and is registered once, with a UHID. The doctor orders blood tests and an X-ray from the consultation screen, and both appear in the diagnostic queue. By evening the patient is admitted, a bed is assigned from the ward board, and the pharmacy fills the IPD medication order. At discharge, the administrator sees every charge in one bill, the TPA claim is prepared from the same record, and the case moves to MRD without anyone re-typing a field.

What is a hospital management system?

A hospital management system (HMS), sometimes called hospital management software or a hospital information system, is the software that records and connects what happens in a hospital: registration, consultations, admissions, investigations, medicines, billing, staff and records. The point is not digitising each task in isolation. The point is that a fact entered once, such as a patient's identity or a lab order, is available to every department that needs it.

If you are comparing terms, our guide to HMS, HIS, EMR and EHR explains where they overlap, and the complete guide to hospital management systems walks through the full scope. In this page we focus on how DevOrbital HMS covers the hospital end to end.

Which departments does a hospital management system cover?

DevOrbital HMS groups its 40+ modules into eight platform categories: Patient Care, Diagnostics, Pharmacy and Central Stores, Finance, HRMS, MRD, Reports and Analytics, and System Master. Patient care spans OPD, IPD, emergency and operation theatre. Diagnostics covers pathology, radiology, cardiology and endoscopy on one workflow.

Finance includes hospital billing and insurance and TPA management. People and records include HRMS and payroll and medical records. You can see the full list on our modules page and the platform overview, or use the module selector to shortlist what your hospital needs first.

Can a hospital adopt modules one at a time?

Yes. Many hospitals cannot switch every department on the same day, and forcing that creates resistance on the floor. In DevOrbital HMS each module runs standalone, so a hospital can begin where the pain is sharpest, for example the laboratory or the pharmacy, and bring in IPD, billing and records later.

Because the modules share the same patient identity and data model, adding a department later is a configuration step rather than a migration project. The use cases section shows typical rollout orders for nursing homes, clinics and polyclinics and multi-specialty hospitals.

How does a hospital management system connect to machines and other systems?

DevOrbital HMS is capable of integrating with machines across eight categories: radiology and imaging, lab analyzers, blood bank equipment, patient monitoring, biometric and access control, barcode and QR scanning, payment terminals and facility IoT.

Each device is scoped and enabled independently, so a hospital connects only what it owns and uses. No department is forced to depend on a machine: results and reports can always be entered manually. For national health-ID workflows, the ABDM-ready add-on module sits alongside the core platform. Because the integration layer is separate from the clinical screens, a hospital can start with manual entry today and connect devices later without retraining staff on a new workflow.

FAQ

Hospital Management: frequently asked questions

EMR software records clinical data such as notes, prescriptions and results for a patient. A hospital management system covers that and the operational side as well: registration, bed management, billing, insurance, pharmacy, stores, HR and reporting. DevOrbital HMS includes the clinical record and the administrative modules in one platform, so staff work from a single source of truth instead of switching between tools.

Yes. Every module runs standalone, and hospitals commonly start with one or two departments, such as billing or the laboratory, and add more later. Once bundled, modules share one patient identity and one record, so you do not re-enter data or migrate it when you expand. The module selector on this site can help you shortlist where to begin.

Both. Cloud deployment runs on your own domain and brand with a dedicated instance, and is the fastest route to go-live because there is no on-site infrastructure to set up. On-premise keeps data inside your hospital, with internet-based sync available for support. The workflows and screens are the same in either mode.

DevOrbital HMS is designed to support the documentation, audit trails and role-based access that help you prepare for NABH-style reviews, and an ABDM-ready add-on module is available. It helps you prepare; it does not replace your own accreditation, registration or assessment process, and it should not be read as a guarantee of any certification.

It is capable of integrating with radiology modalities, lab analyzers, blood bank equipment, patient monitors, biometric devices, barcode and QR scanners, payment terminals and facility IoT sensors. Whether a particular device can be connected depends on its output interface, so each one is assessed, scoped and enabled individually during onboarding, and no department is forced to depend on a machine.

Each organisation's data is logically isolated from others. Backups run through a lightweight outbound-only agent and are encrypted, and the audit trail records who created, edited or deleted what and when. User roles control access at module level, so staff only see the screens their job needs. Our security page explains each of these controls in more detail.

Start by listing the departments where the pain is sharpest, then choose the modules to go live first. Timelines depend on how many modules you enable, any data migration, and staff training. Cloud deployments are generally the quickest to start. Contact us and we will outline a plan specific to your hospital rather than quote a generic timeline.
